Kochi Biennale,
Students’ Biennale
(4th Edition)

DIGITAL DESIGN, USER INTERFACE DESIGN

An online platform to showcase the work of over 300 student artists, curated as part of the Kochi Biennale

The title of the 4th edition of the Students’ Biennale, States of Disarray: Practice as Restitution was a fitting prologue to the immense body of work selected by its 5 curators. Working through the incredibly challenging environment of a global pandemic, we worked remotely with the Biennale team to move the entire showcase online as a physical show was impossible.

We designed an interface who’s main purpose was to focus viewer’s attention on the artists and their work. Navigation elements were moved to the edges of the screen and category titles were placed as ‘bookends’ on either side. This allowed the centre of the screen to remain flexible, allowing for both static, moving and interactive displays without a loss of precious screen space. On mobile menus were moved to the bottom, creating a single efficient system of moving through hundreds of individual works.

Compared to traditional physical spaces that have white walls and external lighting, screens are backlit. We designed the entire site with a charcoal grey background for easy focus on image and text.

The Students’ Biennale, 4th edition was a landmark project that provided new insights into curating, managing and showcasing a large event of its kind.
